Celebrate our prairie heritage this fall through book discussions and special events. We will read and discuss the classic novel O Pioneers! by Willa Cather. Children may also participate in the program by reading and discussing Caddie Woodlawn at the Kids Breakfast Book Club or Twister on Tuesday at Book Munchers in October. When Jack and Annie travel back to the Kansas prairie in search of "something to learn," they gain an understanding of how hard life was for pioneers and they experience the terror of a tornado. Books will be available to check out at the Youth Services desk, starting September 15.

  Building an 1890s Farm
Tuesday, September 13, 3:30 p.m.

A costumed interpreter from Kline Creek Farm guides students in grades 1-6 in activities to compare their lives to life in DuPage 125 years ago. Students will saw wood, make rope, churn butter and build a scale model post-and-beam barn. Registration required.

  St. James Farm: Dairy Farming Then and Now
Thursday, October 13, 4:00 p.m.

An educator from St. James Farm talks to kids in grades 1-6 about dairy farming past and present, including milking cows, delivering milk, and making butter.  Dairy items and photos will be displayed,  and take-home activity cards will be provided. Registration required.

The American landscape has inspired countless artists to capture its complexity, diversity and beauty.  In this slide lecture, art historian Jeff Mishur discusses the work of famous U.S. nature painters such as Andrew Wyeth, Thomas Cole, Winslow Homer and Albert Bierstadt. Registration recommended.
