Job Title: Young Adult Assistant
Classification: Part-time, non-exempt
Location: Winfield Public Library
Schedule: Part-time, 28 hours per week including evenings and two Saturdays per month
Pay Rate: $18.00 per hour
Benefits: Paid vacation, sick, and personal time off after 90-days. IMRF included.
The Young Adult Assistant supports library services for teens and young adults (approximately ages 12–18) by assisting with programs, collections, and daily public service operations. This position plays a key role in creating a welcoming, inclusive environment that encourages learning, creativity, and lifelong library use. The ideal candidate enjoys working with teens, is dependable, and is enthusiastic about libraries and community engagement. The Young Adult Assistant reports to the Adult & Digital Services Librarian and Circulation Manager.
Responsibilities
- Provide positive direct customer service to teens, parents, and the general public at service desks
- Plan, promote, and present programs for teens and young adults, including educational, recreational, and creative activities
- Maintain the Young Adult collection, including purchasing, displays, and weeding
- Assist with circulation tasks such as checking materials in and out, registering patrons, and handling holds
- Assist patrons with library resources, technology, and basic reference questions
- Encourage positive behavior and enforce library policies in a respectful and consistent manner
- Support outreach efforts to schools, community organizations, and local events as assigned
- Prepare program materials, set up rooms, and cleanup
- Work with Marketing Assistant to create newsletter content
- Perform other library duties as needed
Qualifications
Required:
- Associate’s Degree or two years of college
- Experience working with teens or young adults (paid or volunteer)
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully as part of a team
- Comfort using computers, tablets, and basic office software
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow library policies
Preferred:
- LTA Certificate
- College coursework or degree in library science, education, social work, or a related field
- Experience with teen programming, clubs, or educational activities
- Interest in technology, gaming, creative arts, or literacy initiatives
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to build positive relationships with teens from diverse backgrounds
- Creativity and flexibility when assisting with programs and activities
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to handle challenging situations calmly and professionally
- Willingness to learn new technologies and library systems
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work is primarily indoors in a public library setting
- Requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting materials up to 30 pounds
- Regular interaction with the public, including children and teens
- Schedule may include afternoons, evenings, and occasional weekends
